Abrasion, lubrication and the chain joint
Each joint articulates as it enters and leaves a sprocket. The pin and bush carry bearing pressure while the roller seats into the tooth pocket. Use the corresponding EP-SP sprocket family or a verified equivalent tooth form for the selected pitch and roller diameter. Check tooth thickness against inner width, confirm strand spacing for duplex or triplex chain, and verify sprocket runout and axial alignment. Connecting links, offset links, guards, guides, bearings and lubrication hardware should be reviewed at the same time because each can change the loading seen by the chain.
Installation and maintenance priorities
Set alignment before final tensioning. Leave the correct operating slack for the drive rather than tightening the chain like a belt. After initial running, inspect the complete path for tight spots, unusual noise, hot joints and uneven tooth contact. Later inspections should measure chain length over a repeatable number of pitches and record the result so wear can be trended instead of guessed.
When contamination is severe, shorter visual inspection intervals can reveal packed sprocket valleys, damaged guards or failed lubricant delivery before measurable elongation becomes the only warning. Replace damaged components as a system where the wear pattern shows they have been working against each other.
Choosing an EP DHA Roller Chain series
EP-25, EP-35, EP-40, EP-41, EP-50, EP-60 and larger series cover different pitch and component envelopes. Single, duplex, triplex and heavy-duty constructions change width, mass, sprocket design and allowable duty. The correct series should be confirmed from transmitted power or torque, speed, tooth counts, shaft centres, service factor, geometry and the actual environment—not from model popularity.
Can DHA roller chain be selected from pitch alone?
No. Pitch is the first check, but roller diameter, inner width, strand count, plate geometry and the existing sprocket must also match the drive.
Should sprockets be inspected during a chain replacement?
